Greece

Like so many other things, it appears that the Greeks invented coins. It was a slow process from using coarse metals to using small pieces of metal marked and included on a scale of values. In Room 1, alongside a reproduction of a coin production workshop from those times, we can hear about some of the early weight systems, such as the one based on the drachma.

It is worth spending a few minutes to look at the audiovisuals on show in Room 2, and then taking a look at the best of Greek monetary art. You won’t see anything like it anywhere else in the Mueum's coin collection- Only some of the medals can compare with these small silver sculptures.
