During the reign of Carlos III the San Carlos Bank was founded to respond to the issue of public debt, known as royal vouchers (vales reales), considered the precursor to banknotes, since they circulated as currency. This same Bank issued the first series of bonds, which were true notes, exchangeable for coins and interest-free.
